Southwest District Health and Marsing School partner for youth mental health initiative

Southwest District Health (SWDH) and Southwest Idaho Communities for Youth (C4Y) are partnering with the Marsing School District and the Marsing Community to implement programs intended to support youth mental well-being and prevent youth substance use.

SWDH has awarded the Marsing school district a $30,000 grant to fund programs to raise awareness and address youth mental health wellbeing.

C4Y surveyed kids recently to find out priority areas to help support mental health in kids and prevent substance use.

“We always want what’s best for our youth, and that means not being afraid to jump in and learn about what’s most impacting them. Our school district is excited to be partnering with SWDH and C4Y because we know they’re the right folks to help us to do upstream prevention work to support healthy youth and our community,” said Norm Stewart Superintendent of the Marsing School District.

SWDH Project Coordinator Tara Woodward said, “We’re thrilled that the Marsing community is all in and we’re ready to partner with them. In a nutshell, upstream prevention means focusing on addressing risk and protective factors to prevent substance use, poor mental health or mental health crisis, and other unwanted health outcomes from occurring. If we can create safer environments, teach kids and teens skills that help them deal with challenges, and foster strong relationships throughout a community, we can have healthier, happier, kids, families, and communities.”
