Waikapu found itself facing threat of destruction | News, Sports, Jobs

I am writing to express my deepest gratitude and admiration for the exceptional efforts displayed by the Maui Fire Department and our remarkable community during the devastating wildfires that swept across our beloved island on Aug. 8.

The coordinated response and selfless acts of countless individuals stand as a testament to the resilience and unity that define Maui.

On that fateful evening, as multiple wildfires raged across the landscape, our own Waikapu found itself facing the threat of destruction.

Amidst a series of unfortunate events, a wildfire ignited in the heart of Old Waikapu, a place rich with history and cherished multigenerational plantation homes. The potential for catastrophe was heightened by the hurricane-force winds left in the wake of Hurricane Dora.

However, it was the swift action of our dedicated community members, an off-duty firefighter and the courageous teams at the Maui fire and police departments that prevented Waikapu from succumbing to the same horrors that befell other parts of our island.

The close-knit fabric of Old Waikapu, much like Lahaina, is composed of homes with a heritage that spans generations, making them susceptible to the destructive force of fire.

The landscape surrounding Waikapu, with its dry grass fields, aged power line poles and exposed water pipelines, posed additional challenges.

In this time of crisis, it was nothing short of miraculous that we emerged unscathed. I extend my heartfelt mahalo to our friends, family and the courageous first responders who rallied together during this crisis.
